Chicago Summer Wedding at Loft Lucia + an Interview With Jen From The Local Petaler
An all time favorite wedding for Jess and Owen! These two felt like long lost friends and believe me when I say it takes a lot to get me on the dance floor (especially without my camera) but Jess made it happen. Cannot say enough good things about these two and the entire team behind making it so special.
I reached out to their florist, Jen, from The Local Petaler to answer some questions that I thought could be SO helpful to inquiring couples. She is beyond talented and you’d be lucky to have her be a part of your day! Read her interview below.
Introduce yourself! Where are you from/where do you live? What is your background in and what got you started in this work?
I'm Jen Turriff, owner of The Local Petaler. I'm actually based in my hometown of St. Charles, IL, a far (too far IMO) west suburb of Chicago. My background is in art, television and film production, and comedy writing... so naturally I became a wedding florist. Very randomly started floral arranging after a need to shift careers, and it quickly blossomed (bad pun) into a booming wedding and event floral design business!
What is your favorite part of your job?
Hard to say. I think it's that moment where everything comes together and the clients see their goals for the day come to life. I also truly love seeing how photographers capture my work throughout the day.
Best tips for a wedding day in regards to flowers?
Trust your florist. Don't be afraid of color - even a little goes a long way! Rent decor items from your florist - it's cheaper and so so much less stressful than doing it yourself, and it makes for a much more cohesive event. And on the day of - keep those bouquet babies as hydrated as possible!
Most underrated flower?
CARNATIONS. Period. End of story.
Tell me about one of your favorite projects/events you've done!
I did a disco/retro vegas themed wedding last year that was epic. Any time a client is really cool, has unique and interesting ideas and gives you their full trust (and also hires a great vendor team)... they're going to get the best results. And it was great. But the best part is that I've maintained my relationships with the couple and their family!
